ZTE could lose Ethiopian network upgrade contract over cost dispute

Chinese vendor ZTE Corp is reportedly at risk of losing part of a deal worth USD800 million to expand state-owned Ethio Telecom’s network as result of a dispute over the costs of upgrading existing systems, according to Reuters. Ethiopia’s Communications and Technology Minister Debretsion Gebremichael was cited as saying of the matter: ‘We have contractual issues unresolved … Swapping existing technology with no additional costs is one.’ While the state had reportedly expected ZTE to upgrade existing equipment without any additional charge, it is understood that ZTE has now said such work will cost between USD150 million and USD200 million more. Meanwhile, in the wake of these claims it has also been suggested that either Ericsson or Nokia Networks could step in and replace ZTE on the network upgrade project.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in August 2013, and less than a month after it had inked a separate USD700 million agreement with Huawei with a view to expanding the country’s mobile infrastructure, the Ethiopian government completed a USD800 million deal with ZTE. Under this deal ZTE agreed to roll out a 4G network in the capital Addis Ababa, while also expanding Ethio Telecom’s existing 2G and 3G networks. Andualem Admassie, acting chief executive officer at the incumbent operator, was cited as saying at the time that the agreement would enable it to double the number of mobile subscribers on its books to more than 50 million, noting: ‘The expansion is vital to attain Ethio Telecom’s objective of increasing telecom service access and coverage across the nation, as well as to upgrade existing network to new technology.’

Hands-on with the ZTE Nubia Z5 S Mini

Earlier today we got the chance to get a first look at the ZTE Nubia Z5 S Mini. Head past the break to check out our first impression of this newly-launched 4.7-inch handset from ZTE.
ZTE Nubia Z5S Mini Philippines
Unlike the Blade Vec Pro and the Blade Vec 4G, the two other phones that were launched alongside this smartphone, the Nubia Z5 S Mini has this youthful vibe to it.
When viewed head-on, the handset reminded us of the clean design of theRedMi 1s because of the red accent of its single capacitive button which is situated just below the 4.7-inch IGZO display.
Nubia Z5S Mini (web)
The back side, on the other hand, is a different affair. The back panel has a smooth matte-like finish that has the same feel as the earlier HTC handsets like the One X. The phone’s 13MP rear camera is situated near the top-left corner of the phone’s posterior which is accentuated by a ring around it that fits well with the overall design scheme of the handset.
The button placement is nothing out of the ordinary; volume rocker is on the right and the Power button is at the top right hand corner which is neighbored by the audio jack. Meanwhile, the Micro-USB port is located at the bottom left, near the speaker which sits on the other side.

Nubia Z9 Leaked (Rumor)

nubia z9 479x640Nubia has rolled out some pretty interesting smartphones in the past, but none of them have really taken off in a big way and caused plenty of news channels to focus on the incredibly long queues. Still, there have been some decent smartphones that offer bang for your hard earned buck, and what you see above here is rumored to be the upcoming Nubia Z9 from ZTE, and there is every possibility, too, that this happens to be a handset that has been branded by the e-commerce site known as JingDong.
What makes the alleged Nubia Z9 so interesting to talk about would be its apparently bezel-free face, while the Home button itself does bring back memories of other Nubia models. As for the display, it is touted to measure somewhere in the region of 5.2” to 5.3” (not much room to move about here), and the unit itself is touted to eliminate bezels at the side. In order to make up for the lack of side edges, there will be a larger area located below the screen.
Rumored hardware specifications for this upcoming Nubia handset include a Full HD display, 3GB RAM, a rear shooter with optical image stabilization, among others. Hopefully more details will be revealed in due time.

You need to act - Heartbleed bug

You need to act - Heartbleed bug

Heartbleed is a security bug in the open-source OpenSSL cryptography library, widely used to implement the Internet's Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. This vulnerability results from a missing bounds check in the handling of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) heartbeat extension, the heartbeat being behind the bug's name. A fixed version of OpenSSL was released on April 7, 2014, at the same time as Heartbleed was publicly disclosed. At that time, some 17 percent (around half a million) of the Internet's secureweb servers certified by trusted authorities were believed to be vulnerable to the attack, allowing theft of the servers' private keys and users' session cookies and passwords. (Heartbleed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Here is a listed of places that are or were affected by the Heartbleed bug.

If something you use is on the list and their services have been patched you may want to change your password.
If they have not yet patched yet it will do no good to change your password so wait for that service/site to be patched then change password.
For example, Gmail was affected but is now patched so you should probably change your gmail password.

More details are in the following link:

Dropbox for Windows 2.6.30

Dropbox for Windows 2.6.30

Dropbox is an online storage provider and with all the options out there is still one of the best. I use this application to easily sync files between my work and home PC but as a super easy way of getting files to other people. I also find the Android application very useful to get non-Play Store applications quickly across my various devices.

Both Microsoft and Google are making a huge push to get people using their various offerings, but this one I just keep coming back to. What is new since 2.6.28? Not alot but change is good!
2.6.30
- Fix issue with linking second account for a small number of users on Windows

2.6.29
- Fixes an issue where the second account would get unlinked if email associated with account changes
- Changes to camera uploads splash

Zte zmax review and comparison to mega

Zte zmax review and comparison to mega

Have my zmax for a few days now, would like to post my review;

Metro version, paid 250 but got a 50 buck rebate, THIS PHONE IS INEXPENSIVE but has a better build feeling then the mega.

First, I came off of the samsung mega, which I loved until the kitkat update, Kitkat is absolutely the worst android update I have ever tried on any phone, really bogged down the low end hardware of the mega,( which only has a dual core)

After the kitkat "upgrade the boot loader is locked and I cannot find a sound and safe root

Then I broke the screen, and replacing the screen was only a couple less then trying the zmax so zmax I got.

The zmax has a smaller screen then the mega, and it's almost the same size overall, I can't gloss over that, if I could get an even bigger screen I would so that's one complaint in comparison to the mega, the bigger screen on the mega was the only reason i did not get the note

The zmax also has kitkat and there is no root for the kat on this phone yet either, however the zmax is such a trimmed down bare bones version of android that there isn't much more I would do with root privilege, this phone has a quadcore, the mega is dual, zmax is MUCH faster then the mega running kitkat, and faster then mega was on the bean, programs snap to, close fast, the phone comes right up, on the mega the phone lagged for what seemed like seconds once I "upgraded" to kitkat.

In addition, disabling a program in settings keeps it from loading at boot too so I don't really need root to get rid of what little bloat is on this phone.

The speaker seems the same quality and volume as the mega, I know on the web they say it's a small speaker for a big phone but I don't notice a difference over the mega, that might be me though, don't trust me on that cuz I am not doing side by side db benchmarks

A few things to get used to, the screen buttons need to be pushed harder then any other phone I've had.

IMPORTANT...the "recent apps" which is usually on the home button long hold is on the menu button on the zmax.
It might be my imagination but I think the 4g antennae handles more bandwidth as I seem to get 5 mgs more with the zmax then I did with the mega.

This phone has sharper edges then the mega, feels much smaller in the hand and is easier to hold for me, I have medium sized hands and holding either phone is not an issue for me

Battery life on all big phones is usually great as the battery is commensurately larger then smaller phones

Another thing

It was disappointing I did not have the option to move apps to the sd card and wanted root just for that, but just found out by installing the app called "move app to sd card", on this phone it seems the sd card is shared by the os with the hardrive so there is no need to move apps to the card!, to me that is a great solution and one I would prefer if given a choice

Am looking forward to root but I really do not know what I am going to do with it since the phone has a stripped down os already

ZTE completes trials of pre-5G technology; China Mobile 3G numbers see first dip whilst 4G growth speeds up

Chinese equipment vendor ZTE have completed pre-commercial field trials of what it claims is the world’s first pre-5G 3D/Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) base stations in partnership with China Mobile. In its press release, ZTE noted that the base stations have a much higher Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) beam forming gain and that the test showed ‘excellent’ coverage enhancement for tall buildings, and improved indoor reception. Further, the vendor claims that 3D/Massive MIMO and multi-antenna technology can improve wireless spectrum efficiency ‘exponentially’ as well as improving network coverage and system capacity. ZTE went on to stress its commitment to the research and development of 5G products, with one official adding that the supplier would ‘continue to deliver pre-5G features to offer 5G-like experience before 5G standardisation.’
Huang Yuhong, vice president of the China Mobile Research Institute commented on the trials that the technology: ‘Will definitely accelerate the pace of qualification and commercial deployment and reinforce the advantages of TDD (Time Division Duplex) technology. China Mobile will continue to strengthen our partnership with ZTE in the development of 3D/Massive MIMO and other 5G technologies.’
In a related development, China Mobile has registered a dip in 3G subscriptions for the first time, with 3G customers dipping from 244.46 million in September to 242.89 million as at 31 October. The fall can largely be attributed to customers migrating to 4G services, with growth in that space accelerating and outstripping previous expectations. Mobile claimed 54.45 million 4G subscribers at the end of October 2014, up from 30.95 million in September and 29.57 million in August. The cellco has previously targeted 50 million 4G users by the end of 2014, before shifting its goal to 70 million, but at its current rate of expansion, it is likely to pass that milestone by the end of November.

ZTE awarded Cambodian LTEcontract

Chinese equipment supplier ZTE Corporation has secured a contract from Southeast Asia Telecommunications Holdings for the deployment of a 4G LTE network in Cambodia. According to a report by ChinaTechNews.com, the Cambodian government has awarded Southeast Asia Telecom (Cambodia) an operating licence allowing it to provide a range of telecoms services, such as mobile communications (including LTE), internet access, fixed-wireless telephony and voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP). The company is rolling out a nationwide FDD-LTE mobile network, which is expected to be operational in the first half of 2015. The Oppo N3 is a smartphone that is well on its way

oppo n3The Oppo N3 is a smartphone that is well on its way, there is no doubt about that. The thing is, this particular device comes with a unique feature (in this day and age anyway) – which is a16MP camera at the back that can swivel itself. Now, I am aware that this is not a new design at all, after all, wasn’t it King Solomon himself who said that there is nothing new under the sun? Nokia did come up with interesting phone models in the past that had a unique method of shooting video – like the Nokia 6260 and the Nokia N93.
The Oppo N3 will feature a 5.5” display to keep up with the times, a quad-core Snapdragon 801with a quartet of 2.5GHz cores, 2GB RAM, a 3,000 mAh battery, and the aforementioned swiveling 16MP camera at the back.
This time around, Oppo has decided to work with Schneider Electric so that this camera will sport an added advantage – that it is motorized. In fact, the Oppo N3’s rear camera is able to rotate the sensor on its own – up to 206 degrees, so that you can shoot panoramic shots without the need to turn the device, since it can rotate on its own. It looks interesting enough, and we ought to see more steady looking panoramic shots with this one when it arrives.

Meet Convergence Accel, Indonesia’s newest venture capital firm

Adrian Li (left) and Donald Wihardja (right) of Convergence Accel.

Last week Jakarta’s newest venture capital firm Convergence Accel announced its first investment in Female Daily Network; a US$1 million round round led by seasoned Indonesian VC Ideosource.

While Convergence Accel is brand new to Indonesia’s startup scene, its founder and managing partner Adrian Li has been in Jakarta since June 2013. An ex-Rocket Internet managing director, Li is also the co-founder of Qraved, one of Jakarta’s well-known foodtech startups. Donald Wihardja, Li’s partner at Convergence Accel, is the former country manager and chief information officer of 2c2p, one of Southeast Asia’s biggest players for ecommerce payment solutions. Wihardja is also the former head of the Indonesian Ecommerce Association.

“I always wanted to start a VC,” says Li. “The strongest motivation for me was that I always believed in the idea of empowering entrepreneurs. For Donald, he’s also long been excited about this. He’s been in Indonesia’s tech business longer than most people, and so we decided to put together our complimentary skillsets and networks.”

Helping local startups reach series A

Currently, Convergence Accel’s fund has around US$25 million ready to be spent on Indonesian startups. Apart from Indonesia’s Bakrie Group, which is making strong moves into the archipelago’s tech space, Li didn’t disclose the identities of Convergence Accel’s backers or their amounts contributed to the fund. He did mention, however, that the fund is still open for investment but that he doesn’t want to let it exceed US$30 million in total.

Here’s how the Civilization Online MMORPG will work

Civilization Online will launch in Korea “very soon”, according to 2K senior producer Garrett Bittner, but the rest of the world world has been kept in the dark about this game… until now.

Civilization Online is a cooperative MMORPG in the truest sense. Unlike traditional MMOs, emphasis in this game is on each individual civilization’s success, rather than the player’s. 2K Games has been heavily involved in the production led by XL Games.

There are a total of four civilizations players can choose from at this point, and since the focus is not on the individual player, there are also no player classes. Instead, at the hands-on demo at G-Star 2014, I was able to choose from a variety of pre-set character models, ranging from the strapping Roman hunk to the generic, broad-shouldered craftsman.

Players will need to work together in order to fight off invaders and get cities set up. This involves chopping trees and smashing rocks for wood and stone building materials, and performing simple quests. From there, they’ll be able to work together to ensure their civilization’s dominance.

How things will work

Having a massive bunch of people running around the map, setting up their own little towns would be chaotic, to say the least. So XL Games and 2K have decided to allow only guild leaders set up cities. Guild leaders will be in charge of the city’s layout, so they’re the ones who get to choose which building goes where, after which all you non-guild-leader peons need to start mining stone and chopping down trees to get these buildings up and running. During this layout stage, the camera view switches from third-person to top-down, and the city planning UI comes into play.

Anyone can be a guild leader, but since these cities have to literally be built brick-by-brick, each will need a minimum of 20 players to progress at a playable rate. There is no limit on the number of players who can join, and subsequently, no limit on the number of people who can go to war! These cities, or guilds, in Civilization Online will also be more fluid compared to traditional MMORPGs, with players being able to join at will depending on each guild’s settings.

Guilds will have to work together within their respective civilizations to do battle with the other three battling for dominance. War will take place within server-initiated sessions – which can last anywhere from 30 minutes to three months. It appears that a standard game session will last for a week. These sessions will have victory conditions straight from the boxed Civilization game: domination, culture, and science.
